We are so excited to support the Governor Livingston community in launching a GL Unfiltered branch! Governor Livingston’s former Student Activism Club, now called GL Unfiltered, is rebranding to become a branch in partnership with BH Unfiltered. As one of the founder’s of the original club, I am so excited for this next step! When we first created the outline of the organization, we wanted a safe space to bring students together and talk without judgment, to develop more open-mindedness among the student body. Our club also wanted to give back to those less fortunate in our community and take issues going on in the real world and relate them to what was going on at school. Some of the items we have accomplished on this year’s agenda were hosting multiple round table discussions and an impactful guest speaker, along with growing our club by forming relationships with other organizations at GL. One of our first ideas as a club, holding a feminine hygiene product drive, also came to fruition this year and we were able to help 150 homeless women through the Zufall Health Center for the Health and Wellness Fair in Montclair.

This year, we will be following the usual path of our club, but we will now have the help of BH Unfiltered. Not only have they given us resources and a more official platform, but also lots of ideas for ways to make GL more inclusive. These first steps would be trying to readjust the school curriculum, of history and English specifically, to make sure that literature selections, textbooks, and discussions are unbiased and wholly encompass diverse points of view. Since we are in the classroom, we will be able to work alongside BH Unfiltered and see firsthand what changes will be made.

We also hope to put together a mentorship program for minority students to make them feel less marginalized, along with setting up guidance sessions where students will feel safer reaching out about uncomfortable situations. Working with Link Crew to speak to freshmen at their orientations and going to freshmen English classes is another item on our agenda, as we want students to be aware of the resources available to them.

After spending a good portion of the summer meeting and planning with BH Unfiltered, we are so excited to officially announce this change and hope that more students will be involved in our branch, GL Unfiltered, to make the school a more inclusive place and continue having those uncomfortable conversations.
